Keratoconus

Keratoconus is a progressive disease characterized by thinning of the cornea, which gradually bulges outward into a cone shape, severely impacting vision. It is one of the leading causes of corneal transplants, particularly in young people, as it can result in significant loss of visual acuity if not detected and treated early. Early detection is critical, but the condition is often diagnosed at advanced stages, limiting treatment options.

At CORNEA_project, our work is pivotal in addressing this challenge. We are developing innovative tools based on molecular biomarkers that facilitate the early diagnosis and prognosis of keratoconus. These tools empower ophthalmologists to detect the disease in its initial stages and personalize treatment plans, ultimately improving disease management and enhancing patients’ quality of life.
